Finding Connection in Shared Experience:
Inside Our First “Share Space” Session
Last month, we hosted the very first session of Share Space, a brand-new discussion group for ADHD and autistic adults in North-West London. Created directly from your feedback during Client Voice Month, this group was created in response to something we heard again and again: the need for a relaxed, welcoming space to talk about the realities of neurodivergence, with no pressure, no agenda, just real connection.
Share space is a group to share, reflect and simply be. There’s no pressure to speak and no expectation to perform. Whether you want to open up, or just listen in, you’re welcome as you are. The atmosphere is calm, gentle, and honest, shaped by the needs and comfort of the people in the room.
This month the theme was ‘Surviving Summer’ and we had a thoughtful, open conversation centered around the summer season. As many of us know, summer can bring major disruptions in routine, overwhelming sensory input, and a heightened pressure to socialise, all of which can be challenging for neurodivergent individuals.
We asked our clients what are some top tips for other people who find summer challenging and their top tips were:
- Choosing taxis over public transport when the heat becomes too much
- Using cooling products and fans to manage sensory regulation
- Wearing soft, breathable clothing to avoid irritation
- Giving themselves permission to cancel plans without guilt
- Seeking out calm, shaded areas or familiar routes when outside
If you are interested in joining the group for our next session (on Thursday 25th of September 7-9pm at Acton Gardens Community Centre), then please email adults@adhdandautism.org. We have attached an image to show you what the room is like:
Hope to see you there!
